Frequently Asked Questions

  • How is a key cut?

The key cutting process is straightforward, especially if you have a simple cylinder key.

Locksmiths use a machine called a duplicator.

Your key is placed on one side, with a blank key on the other.

Using a blade to trace the outline of your key, the machine uses this as a template to cut the new key in a few minutes.

If you have a high security key, it likely came with a card. This card proves your ownership and sometimes contains a code. This code can be used to cut your new key, so you might not need the original (ideal if you’ve lost it).

If you’re unsure which type of key you need cutting, speak to your locksmith, who’ll be able to identify it.

  • What should you do if you’ve lost your house key?

    First, don’t panic.

If you’ve really lost your key and can’t find it anywhere, there’s a few things you can do on the situation you’re in:

    • Do you have a spare key?

If you do, use this for the time being. But make sure to visit your local locksmith for a replacement key when you get a chance.

    • Is your spare key locked inside your house?

If you’re locked out of your house but have a spare key inside, you should contact your local locksmith and ask them to help you gain access to your property. This can often be done without damaging your lock.

    • Don’t have a spare key at all?

If you don’t have a spare key and are locked out of your home, a locksmith might be able to create a new one without the original.

If you have a simple door lock, a locksmith may be able to take an impression of the lock and create a new key from this. It could take a while to do this though and could be costly.

If you have a high security lock, you can give a locksmith the code that came with the key (usually found on a card or sometimes on the lock) and they can make a new key.

You’ll need to provide proof of ownership before they can do this, like a driver’s licence with your address, for example.

  • How much does key cutting cost?

For a standard cylinder key, you can expect to pay as little as £4 if you have a spare to duplicate.

Cutting a high security key can start at around £10 if you have the key’s code.

If you don’t have a spare key to copy, you can still get a new one but it’ll likely cost more. Your locksmith will be able to give you a price once you’ve discussed your requirements and they’ve identified the type of key required.

If you think your key’s been stolen – or you’re concerned someone else has it – it could be cheaper to get the locks changed if the original is worth less than you’d pay for a new key.

  • Why might you need your key cutting?

One of the main reasons is so you have a spare key for emergencies.

We recommend everyone has a spare front door key. This ensures you’ve got a backup if you can’t find your keys, break them, or leave them in work, for example.

Or maybe your children are old enough to be trusted with their own key.

If you’re going on holiday, it’s always a good idea to give a house key to someone you trust. A family member, friend or even neighbour. Whether you ask them to water your plants, feed your cats or just want them to have the key in case your house alarm goes off and needs to be reset, this will allow you to enjoy your holiday knowing everything is under control at home.
