4 Top Tips For Keeping Your Home And Valuables Secure When Moving

Moving house? There’s no denying that moving can be fun and exciting – but it can also be very stressful.
From giving everywhere a thorough clean to packing everything up, hiring a van and removal team to transport your belongings and finding somewhere to store your possessions until you’re ready to move in, there is so much to think about. But above all, you need to make sure that everything (including your house) is kept safe and secure.
We appreciate that it can be easier said than done – especially when you’ve already got a lengthy list of jobs to do. However, our locksmiths in Newcastle thought they’d offer a few helpful tips to ensure you have a secure move from your old home to your new one…
1.Organise your belongings
Rule no.1 when moving to a new house is to always be prepared for the big move.
Begin well in advance and start with the rooms and items that you don’t use often. If there’s anything you don’t want to take with you to the new house, now would be the time to declutter or donate it.
Generally, you’ll need a variety of small, medium and large boxes – perhaps even some heavy-duty boxes and wardrobe boxes too. Bubble wrap and newspaper is ideal for protecting any delicate and expensive items too. And it’s worth labelling all boxes to ensure you know what’s inside each.
2.Secure your old residence
There is a lot of commotion involved with moving house and simple things – like remembering to close all the windows and locking the doors – can go straight out the window.
Although you’d not be the only one to let the most basic security standards slide when moving, our Newcastle locksmiths highly advise you to double (if not triple!) check that:
·all windows and doors are shut and locked
·blinds and curtains are closed
·the garage door is closed and locked
·the back gate is closed and secure
·the alarm is set
·all keys are handed over to the estate agent (included duplicated keys)
In doing so, you’ll be able to move onto pastures new, knowing that your old house is safe and secure – ready for the new homeowners.
3.Don’t give out too much information
It’s not uncommon for people to become curious when someone is moving out or moving into the neighbourhood. But even if it’s an innocent conversation, you don’t want to give too much away.
Try not to share details of your moving schedule. They don’t need to know when you’ll be leaving to make a trip to the new house or that you’ll be back at the weekend to pick up a few more things. It’s also a sensible idea not to talk about the items you own or to advertise any lavish goods as that just increases the risk of thieves targeting your house.
4.Replace the locks at your new residence
When you finally move into your new abode, the first thing you need to do is have the door locks replaced for new ones. Although it may seem a little odd, you can never be too sure just how many people have their own key.
For example, previous owners might have had keys copied and forgotten to hand them all back to the estate agent before leaving. Or perhaps workmen were allocated a key when working on the property.
The thought of someone being able to let themselves into your lovely new home with a key is worrying but, the good news is, our locksmiths in Newcastle can help.
