Frequently asked Questions

  • My UPVC door won’t lock. Can you help?

Of course! The team at NLS Security are uPVC door lock specialists and will gladly help you get to the bottom of the issue.

Usually, if your door doesn’t lock when it’s closed, it’s because the latch isn’t catching or engaging. Try testing the spring mechanism by opening the door and pressing the latch with your finger.

If the latch springs out, the lock on your door isn’t aligned properly and will need repairing. If the latch doesn’t spring out, the chances are the mechanism has failed and will need to be replaced.

Another reason why your uPVC door won’t lock could be down to the weather and fluctuating temperatures. On a cold day, soak a cloth in warm water and wipe all around the lock to combat expansion. In warmer conditions, use a cold cloth to prevent it from contracting.

If you’d like our locksmiths to take a look for you, don’t hesitate to give us a call on 0191 238 6000.

  • What’s the best lock for UPVC doors?

A uPVC door typically has a multipoint lock with a Euro cylinder.

These are barrel-shaped locks that can be used to secure both commercial and domestic properties. They’re easy to fit and install, too.

Whilst they all have a kitemark and star rating that indicates security strength, we recommend choosing either a diamond-approved cylinder or a 3-star rated cylinder for extra security.

Those with anti-snap features also protect your property against common door entry threats, such as lock snapping, bumping, picking and drilling.

To find out more about the uPVC door locks we supply at NLS Security, feel free to get in touch.

  • Are UPVC door locks easy to replace?

If you need to change the lock on your uPVC door, you can change just the barrel, which is both quick and easy.

You’ll need to remove the door handle first by unscrewing the top and bottom screws using a Philips-head screwdriver. The inner and outer handles will slide out together.

The next step is to locate the lock barrel’s screw and remove it. It’s usually underneath the lock and a different colour from the other screws.

Once you’ve removed the screw, you’ll need to insert your key into the barrel and turn it to the right. You should then be able to pull the barrel out.

Then, place the new key into your new barrel and slot it back into place. To ensure everything is properly aligned, keep twisting the key in the lock. If you can turn the key normally, the barrel is ready to use.

As soon as the barrel is installed, secure the screw and re-assemble the handle.

    And that’s all!

  • How much do your locksmiths charge?

Locksmiths usually charge an hourly rate for jobs, with the cost of door locks and other materials on top.

The price you’ll pay to hire one of our locksmiths in Newcastle will vary depending on how many uPVC doors need new locks, the quality of the locks required and the time of the call-out.

For instance, if you need us to change all the locks on your property, you can expect to pay more. Likewise, higher quality locks and the more materials required will cost the most – but you can trust that they will be of an exceptionally high standard and last longer.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that you’ll pay more to hire a locksmith in an emergency or out of hours (i.e. evenings, weekends and bank holidays), etc. And if they have to travel a long distance to reach your property, you’ll likely incur additional costs to cover fuel and travel time.

When you come to NLS Security for uPVC door locks, you can relax knowing that our team will discuss your requirements in further detail before offering a tailored solution. We’ll also provide a free, no-obligation quote and outline our costs to ensure no hidden fees.
