How to change a lock

Do you need to swap your existing locks for new ones?
Quite often, people change their locks because they are starting to stick or the bolt has become stiff when they turn the key. It’s also a good idea to replace the locks if someone has recently moved out (even if it’s on amicable terms) or to enhance security at your property.
Although our Newcastle locksmiths – here at NLS Security – are specialists, changing the locks isn’t too difficult to do yourself. Typically, all you need is a little technical skill and a reliable screwdriver.
How to replace your locks in six simple steps:
1.Buy a new look
If possible, you want to buy a new lock that is the same make, model and manufacturer as the one you’re replacing. This will ensure that it fits correctly. If you aren’t too sure which you need, don’t worry – our locksmiths in Newcastle can advise you.
2.Remove the current lock
Start by locating the screws on the inner side of the lock. Found them? Great, you need to remove these along with the turn plate – leaving a hole that you can see through.
3.Remove the old deadbolt
Open the door so you can see the side of the lock (the narrow part that runs along the inside of the door). Locate the two screw heads that are holding it in place and remove them. You should then be able to pull the deadbolt out of the door.
4.Insert your new deadbolt
The next step is to do everything in reverse – only you need to make sure that the new deadbolt is facing upwards. Luckily, most new deadbolts are labelled, which makes it a whole lot easier for you, and you simply use the woodscrews to fasten them firmly in place. If it’s not labelled, our Newcastle locksmiths can help you to orient the deadbolt.
5.Insert the new lock
You’ll notice that the deadbolt you’ve just fitted has slots. These are where you’re going to fit both the locking and turning part of your new lock. Once you’ve put the pieces in the right places, secure them with the screws provided.
6.Test it
Rather than just assuming that it works, it’s a good idea to test your new lock after changing it. With the door open, try using the interior turn assembly and the key lock to double-check its working as it should. If everything seems ok, try it with the door shut.
And that’s it! You should now have a better idea of what you need to do when changing the locks at your property.
