How To Prevent A Lock Snapping

Do you have euro cylinder locks fitted?
Whether it be a single cylinder that provides access from one side, a double cylinder that provides access from both sides, or a thumbturn cylinder that can be locked and unlocked from the inside without a key – these are prone to lock snapping.
What is lock snapping?
“Lock snapping” is a common technique used by burglars to break into a property. It involves breaking the cylinder to then manipulate the lock, causing it to open. The method requires no skill or specialist tools and can take a thief just a few seconds.
We’d all like to believe that the multi-locking points on our doors will protect our properties from such attack, but these are all operated by the cylinder – the weakest part of the lock. If the cylinder is compromised in any way at all, the locking points are rendered useless.
Here our locksmiths in Newcastle explain how an anti-snap lock can prevent a burglary and what we can do to help you avoid lock snapping.
Prevent lock snapping with anti-snap locks
Euro cylinder locks are typically found on UPVC, composite, and aluminium doors in domestic and commercial environments. However, if your cylinder was fitted before 2011, the chances are it hasn’t been tested for lock snapping, so it isn’t anti-snap.
As it’s the highest level of approval for a euro cylinder lock, an SS312 Diamond approved cylinder is ideal.
Keep an eye out for the 3-star Kitemark logo – either on the front or side of the lock – which indicates that it has been tested against lock snapping and can resist this type of attack.
It’s worth noting that anti-snap cylinders come in an assortment of sizes. Once you’ve determined which size you need, the lock must be fitted correctly.
The cylinder shouldn’t protrude more than 3mm from the handle, and it should fit nice and flush with no external overhang. Don’t worry if you’re unsure how to do this – our Newcastle locksmiths are always on hand and will make sure that it fits properly.
