3 things you need to know before requesting key duplication

Stephen Wylde • Apr 21, 2020

Are you forever leaving your door keys behind or locking yourself out of your car? Don’t worry, it happens to us all at the best of times – usually when we’re already running late or due to pick up the kids from school!

Here at NLS Security, we know just how frustrating it can be – and, that’s why we’re sharing our top tips to ensure you get the most out of key duplication services.

1. Call a professional locksmith

If you need to replace your car key, either because it’s faulty or missing, there are a few things you can do. For starters, you could contact your dealership or order one online – but these tend to be the most expensive options and it could take a while for your replacement to be delivered. Not to mention that ordering online is risky, and even if you order one that matches your existing key, you still need someone to program it.

The best solution? Call a professional locksmith, like us at NLS Security. Our MLA locksmiths are currently still working during the lockdown – offering emergency locksmith services – and following government guidelines very closely, to ensure maximum safety. We offer our key duplication service across Newcastle and the North East – priding ourselves on competitive prices. See for yourself by emailing your requirements to info@nlssecurity.co.uk and we’ll happily offer a free no-obligation quote.

2. A locksmith can help with essential work

Here at NLS, we continue to carry out essential work, such as:

·24-hour emergency call outs

·Lockouts if you’re locked out of your home

·Front and back doors not locking

·Opening locked doors when you’re locked in

·Door lock repairs

·Replacement locks (if you’re locked in or out)

·Key cutting

As well as this, we provide emergency auto locksmith work for NHS workers, police officers, local authorities and other key workers who have lost their car keys or can’t get into their vehicles. Luckily, key workers can still benefit from our key duplication service – even if they don’t have the original (or spare) on them. We will, however, need to know a little bit about the vehicle (i.e. whether you use a fob key, slider key or a wafer key) before we can provide a replacement.

3. We are on hand 24/7

Emergencies can happen at any moment – which is why you need to know who to call when they do! Here at NLS, we offer a 24-hour call-out service for all businesses and residents in the North East.

Using the latest technology and methods for key duplication , we can provide a spare copy of your key in just a matter of minutes, allowing you to secure your property or vehicle sooner, rather than later.

If you have any questions about our key duplication service, feel free to get in touch with us on 0191 238 6000 or send an email to info@nlssecurity.co.uk , and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is there a difference between key cutting and key duplication?

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, key cutting and key duplication services are actually slightly different.

Key duplication is the process of copying another key to create an identical copy. It’s often used when a spare key is needed, and there’s an original to copy or where a snapped key needs replacing.

Key cutting is the process of cutting a key from scratch without the original. This process is better carried out by highly experienced locksmiths as, depending on the key type, it can be quite complex.

If you have any questions about our locksmith services, get in touch with us today. Simply call us on 0191 238 6000.

  • How much does key duplication cost?

Typically, you can expect to pay between £4 and £12 depending on the type of key you require.

Simple cylinder keys tend to be the cheapest to copy because the process is straightforward – it can all be done by a machine in minutes.

Safe keys tend to be the most expensive to duplicate. This is because there are so many variations, many of which are double-sided, making the process more complex.

It’s worth noting there’s no governing body for locksmiths, so there’s no set price structure that locksmiths need to follow. Because of this, prices vary between providers.

To find out how much your key duplication will cost, email our experts at info@nlssecurity.co.uk.

  • How is a key duplicated?

Locksmiths use a machine called a duplicator to create an identical copy of your original key.

The way this machine works is quite simple.

The original key is placed on one side of the machine, a blank key on the other. A blade runs across the top of your original key, using it as a template to cut the same pattern into the blank key.

Once your new key has been created, the locksmith will sand it down to ensure there are no sharp corners or rough surfaces.

And that’s it – you have a new key in minutes.

If you have a high security lock and key, your locksmith may ask for proof of ownership – this is usually in the form of a little card that you will have been given when you purchased the lock.

  • Why should I choose NLS Security?

Choosing a trustworthy locksmith is essential.

We’re a member of the Master Locksmith Association. This means our work is regularly inspected so you can be sure every job we fulfil is completed to the highest standards.

Being a member of the Master Locksmith Association also means our locksmiths are all fully qualified and DBS checked, giving you that added peace of mind if we need to attend your property to assess your lock.

We offer a 24 hour emergency locksmith call out service in Newcastle, so if you’ve snapped your house key in the lock, you can be sure we’ll be there in no time at all to help.

And our services don’t stop there. If you’ve misplaced your house keys, your car key doesn’t seem to be working, or you need your locks changed, get in touch and our friendly team will help.
